What local competitor analysis is, what to look at, free ways to do it and how to turn what you learn into a plan, written for owners rather than marketers.

Local competitor analysis means studying the businesses that compete for the same customers in your area, so you can see where you are stronger, where you are weaker and where there is room to grow. You do not need a marketing degree for it, only a few hours and a notepad.
What to look at
- Their Google Business Profile: rating, number of reviews, photos, opening hours, categories
- Their reviews: what customers praise and complain about
- Their website: what they offer, what they charge, how easy it is to book
- Their social media: how often they post, and what gets responses
- Their prices and offers, where public
Start with reviews
Of everything on that list, reviews are the most honest. Owners control their own website and posts. They do not control what customers write. That is why analyzing competitors using Google reviews is a good first step.
Build a simple comparison
Make a table with you and 3 to 5 competitors across the top and these rows: rating, review count, top praise, top complaint, how to book, price level. Fill it in from what you find. Patterns jump out quickly.
Look for gaps, not copies
The aim is not to copy the busiest place. It is to find something customers want that nobody nearby does well, for example faster response, clearer pricing, easier booking or better communication.
Free and paid ways to do it
- Free: search Google Maps for your category in your area and read reviews by hand
- Free: check Google Business Profiles and websites for details
- Paid: tools that summarize reviews for you, such as LocalGap, which reports on nearby competitors from their Google reviews
Turn it into a plan
- Write down the two or three biggest gaps
- Pick one to act on this month
- Change the service, then change how you describe it
- Check back in a month and repeat
Doing it once helps. Doing it regularly keeps you ahead. You can try it for your own area by pasting your Google Business link into LocalGap.
See what your competitors' reviews say
